Prof. T.K. Chandrashekar,Director , KIIT NISER

Tavarekere K. Chandrashekar was born in Shimoga, Karnataka, India in 1956. He received his master's degree from the University of Mysore in 1978. He earned his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1982. After Post doctoral work at University of Massachusetts, Boston (1982-1984) and at Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA (1984-1986), he joined the faculty of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1986 as a lecturer. He has been a full professor since 1995. He spent a year (1993-1994) on sabbatical at University of Koln, Germany as an Alexander Van Humbolt Fellow. He was deputed as Director, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST,CSIR), Trivandrum from November 2003 to November 2008. Presently he is the Director of National Institute for Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, India since December 2008.

Professor Chandrashekar is an academician and has taught undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D level courses at IIT Kanpur. Furthermore he is an active researcher and his research interests include; a) Model compounds for Photo-synthetic intermediates, b) Photo catalysis, c) Expanded porphyrins and their applications as anion receptors, organic NLO materials, Catalysts for organic transformations and biological reactions. He has published more than 120 research publications and reviews in journals of international repute. 16 students from IIT Kanpur have received Ph.D degree in chemistry under Professor Chandrashekar's supervision.

Professor Chandrashekar has received several recognitions for his contributions to teaching and research. His awards include; Homi Bhabha award for excellence in research, P.C.Ray memorial award of Indian Chemistry Society, CRSI medals, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize in the area of chemical sciences. Chemito award, and J.C.Bose National Fellowship of DST. He is an elected fellow of all the three science academies of India. In the year 2008 he was elected as a fellow of Third World Academy of Science, Trieste, Italy for his contributions to chemistry.
